Mail & Guardian: Shocking revelations on Athletic South Africa

I have read Investigations being conducted, independently, by newspapers in South Africa and around the world with damning, sad, worrying and strange – some even with no words to describe them – revelations.

In South Africa: Sunday Times, City Press, The Star, Sunday Independent are just some of the newspapers that deserve Oscars, if any. Most importantly, Mail & Guardian is one newspaper that should receive every Oscar.

Today, Mail & Guardian exposed damning revelations on South Africa’s Caster Semenya who, according to investigations, was used by Athletic South Africa.

It has been revealed that Athletic South Africa president Leonard Chuene ‘knew Caster Semenya was gender-tested in South Africa before World Chamions in Berlin last month”.

This follows Chuene’s denial to the nation and the world of not knowing if Semenya was tested locally before the tournament.

The email, reports Mail & Guardian, was sent by Adams [Harold Adams, Athletics South Africa’s chief medical officer and team doctor and President Jacob Zuma’s personal doctor] to ASA general manager Molatelo Malehopo and was copied to Chuene on 5 August 2009 while the championship started ten days later.

Other Mail & Guardian revelations, among others, are that:
a) Semenya was tested in Pretoria by Oscar Shimange, a medical doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology,
b) Adams, who Chuene claimed to have been commissioned by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to oversee Semenya’s gender tests in South Africa and was not the official doctor of team South Africa while investigations have proved the contrary,
c) Chuene refused to withdraw Semenya from the competition as was advised by Adams after Semenya’s resulted were known, but he refused,
d) ASA officials were exploiting Caster for financial gain for she received R20 000 for an interview with You magazine as a cover girl and could appeared in Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks Show if members of ASA had not demanded a fee.
Poor Caster and his family.

WELL DONE M&G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
